- Introduction
Thank you for your interest in becoming a volunteer
stop coordinator for the Wings of Freedom B-17 &
B-24 Tour with the Collings Foundation. Because
of people like you who offer to play the important
role of stop coordinator, our aircraft will be seen
by nearly three million people this year in over
120 cities across the United States. In each one
of these cities the aircraft touch each of these
people in a very personal way; becoming the catalyst
that allows the older generations to communicate
with younger ones and let the oral histories of
our veterans and citizens that were part of the
World War II generation pass on to the next generation.
Symbols of American spirit and freedom, the B-17
and B-24 fly from city to city educating as they
entertain. By allowing people to tour them; to see
and feel exactly as they were when rolling off the
production line in 1944, it provides an important
history lesson for those who see them and is an
honor for us to remember and memorialize those veterans
who gave their youth, energy, and even lives in
the fight for freedom nearly sixty years ago. They
are not forgotten, and the bombers will fly on,
from sea to shining sea, in remembrance of our veterans
for years to come.
We
can only do this with your help. As you make progress
on your upcoming stop, think of the lives that will
be touched and the stories that will be passed on.
Remember that with each year, the job of the B-17
and B-24 becomes more and more important as we lose
so many of our veterans of WWII to time and age.
Much like a torchbearer in the Olympics, you will
help carry the flame and pass it on as it moves
from place to place. Your dedication to this task
will keep the planes alive; the donations from the
stop will keep the aircraft flying in an ever more
costly flight environment. Each dollar earned and
each dollar saved helps, be it through a flight
experience or through a complementary hotel room
or two… it all helps us accomplish our mission.
For
nearly fourteen years, B-17 and B-24 have flown
this mission, and we here at the Collings Foundation
have put together some of the guidelines and hints
that have helped our stop coordinators in the past.
Please take the time and look through this packet
as it will help answer some of the questions you
may have. Think of it as the flight plan for the
new missions of the B-17 and B-24; missions in peacetime,
and you are the wing commander. Good luck and thanks
for helping us "Keep 'em Flying!"
