P.9 - During the Event

After all the pre-event planning is done, it is time for the actual tour stop. The actual stop is very rewarding when all the elements of planning are covered. The value of seeing veterans reunited with their planes, young people learning about the aircraft that helped preserve freedom, and people taking their first flight aboard the B-17 and B-24 is enormous. Your service to the public will be appreciated too… the Collings Foundation, the veterans of WWII and their families thank you for helping promote the history and keeping their memories alive in their honor.

You are invited along to make the inbound flight into your local stop with us. It is a wonderful opportunity to fly onboard the aircraft that you have brought to you local area, and a wonderful time to meet with the press and meet the crew that you will work with over the next few days. Many coordinators find that it is helpful to drive one of the rental vans to meet up with the planes at the previous stop with the hotel and vehicle guest riders as well as the media to allow everyone to fly on the inbound flight. A crewmember from the aircraft will be able to drive the van back to the airport to avoid anyone having to pick it up after the flight. Upon arrival the aircraft will be set-up and opened up for tours or for a flight experience. The schedule differs from site to site, so please check with the crew.

You may want to volunteer with the crew during the weekend as well and we encourage it. Seeing the public and interacting with the crew is half the fun. If circumstances prevent you from being on-site during the event, you may consider appointing a "second-in-command" volunteer to help and assist the crew, or at least give the crew contact numbers where you can be reached in case they need you.

You may also want to incorporate a group of volunteers to help as well. The Collings Foundation asks that before you bring a group of volunteers in, please call and consult with the Wings of Freedom coordinator at the Collings Foundation offices. They will be able to give you an estimation as to how many crew we will have, and how many (if any) extra volunteers may be needed. This will assure that there won't be too many people on the ground that could create confusion.

If at any point you have any questions or problems involving crew or operations, please feel free to contact the Collings Foundation offices and speak with the Wings of Freedom coordinator or Bob Collings at 978-562-9182. We are always available to answer your questions and always appreciate feedback
