Race of the Century

July 25, 2015 - July 26, 2015

$10 – $15

The Collings Foundation presents: Race of the Century
July 25th and 26th, Stow MA
Transportation technologies from the last 100 years presented in the most extraordinary series of races.

Horses, Hybrids, electric cars, vehicles powered by water, fantastic machines, all poised to solve the transportation issues of the day. The Collings Foundation will host a most entertaining event that pits some of the greatest mobility based technological advancements against each other in Race of the Century.

During the early 1900’s the first auto carriages were invented. The thought of a “horseless carriage” rumbling down the path seemed amazing. The traditional horse and buggy quickly became history with the emergence of auto carriages like the 1905 Franklin and 1909 Stanley Steamer.

Which technologies will win? There is only one way to find out! Some of the races:

Horse/1867 Stage Coach Vs. 1904 Franklin Type A Roadster: No competition here… silly motorized carriage. We all know where the real “horse power” lies.

Horse/Buggy Vs. 1908 Stanley Steamer: This will be a close race. An automobile that runs on water? Incredible! Can it be the horse and buggy has met its match?

1914 Stutz Bearcat Vs. 1914 Mercer: The most incredible race ever! – Two of the fastest cars of the time racing against each other.

1937 Offy Sprint Car Vs. Methanol Racer: Fresh from the 1937 New England race circuit – our driver “Blazing Bruce” will go all out to prove a true race machine is faster than any aircraft in a 1/8 mile race.

See an amazing exhibition and display of carriages, carts and horses from the Massachusetts Carriage and Driving Society. Additional exhibits of antique toys, transportation contraptions, steam engines, flying machines and early hybrid technologies will be exhibited. The Collings Foundation’s amazing collection of over 70 automobiles, race cars and aircraft will be open for viewing.

WHERE: The Race of the Century will be held at the Foundation’s Headquarters: 137 Barton Road, Stow MA. For a detailed map go to: www.collingsfoundation.org/directions.

WHEN: The Race of the Century takes place on both July 25th and 26th. Facility and collection will be open from 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM. We will be offering rides in a legendary WWII aircraft! 20-minute Stearman flights are $200 (flown by an original Tuskegee Airman). Flights will be conducted at Stow Minuteman airport.
